WELCOME!
I'm Camilla Birkehorn, founder of The Equestrian Collective. My mission is to help first-time breeders feel more confident, informed, and prepared when planning to breed their own foal.
In 2016, I couldn’t afford the horse I dreamed of. So I decided to breed her instead.
That decision eventually gave me Disa, but it also began a breeding journey filled with questions, research, doubt, learning, and more than a few “Why did nobody tell me this?” moments.
My research and first-hand experience have led me to create guides, workbooks, and practical resources for horse owners preparing to breed their own foal.
HOW IT ALL STARTED...
I didn’t grow up knowing how to breed horses.
Horses became my safe place when I was a shy, cautious child, and for over 40 years, they've been a large, and an important, part of my life. I've worked with them, learnt about them in school, studied them, ridden them, and spent more hours in the stable than I can count. But owning one of my own remained a dream for many years. I bought my first horse at 32.
When I eventually decided to breed, I had some basic knowledge, but there was a lot I needed to learn. I researched, asked questions, compared options, and learned step by step what mattered before breeding, during pregnancy, around foaling, and in those first important weeks with a new foal.
It was challenging, fascinating, sometimes overwhelming, and absolutely magical.
And I’d do it again.
My personal experience became the reason I created The Equestrian Collective.
I know what it feels like to start with more questions than answers, and I’ve built the kind of guidance I wish I had. I’ve combined what I learned through my own breeding journey with continued research, reading, and learning from established equine sources.
Not because breeding is simple.
But because it can feel a lot less overwhelming when you have somewhere who's been in your shoes.
My guidance and resources are designed to complement, not replace, advice from your veterinarian or other qualified equine professionals.
